Venture to Argentina
Glaciers, Penguins and the Pampas
October 29- November 12, 2009
Leaders: Simon Thompson and Luis Segura
Our 14 day tour to Argentina starts in Buenos Aires with a visit to one of city’s natural parklands. Here we will get a perfect introduction to the birdlife of this part of the Southern Cone of South America. From the glaciars, pristine lakes and natural beauty of Tierra del Fuego to the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires, we will explore a great selection of Argentina’s landscapes. Highlights will be many but could include the vast colonies of Southern Elephant-Seals, Southern Fur-Seals and Magellanic Penguins on the Valdes Peninsula; a catamaran trip on the Beagle Channel watching albatrosses, shearwaters and petrels wheeling in the southern winds and a boat trip in Los Glaciares National Park. We will also spend a few days around Buenos Aires. Here we could see a whole host of species with names as bizarre as Bearded Tachuri, Great Pampa-Finch and Coscoroba Swan. Going south along the Atlantic coast of Buenos Aires, we should see spectacular flocks of migrant waders, a wide array of grassland birds, and some unique mammals, like the scarce Pampas Deer. Northern migratory shorebirds, like Hudsonian Godwit and White-rumped and Baird’s Sandpipers spend the northern winter (South American summer), in the southernmost tip of our continent. They share the area with some local residents, such as Hudson’s Canastero, Firewood Gatherer, Bay-capped Wren-Spinetail, and Greater Rhea. From grasslands to glaciars, and from coast to the mountains, join us for a fascinating journey exploring the many vistas of Southern Argentina this coming November.
